How Your Diet Shows Up on Your Skin

What you eat may be shaping your skin more than you think

We've all been there.

A breakout appears the week of an important event. Your skin suddenly feels dry for no obvious reason. Or maybe you've been dealing with eczema or irritation that just doesn't seem to settle.

So naturally, we head to the skincare aisle.

A new cleanser.
A better moisturiser.
Maybe another serum because apparently
this one is the answer.

And sometimes those things absolutely help.

But here's something we don't talk about nearly enough...

Your skin isn't just something you see in the mirror.

It's your body's largest organ, and like every other organ, it relies on good nutrition to do its job well.

As a Clinical Nutritionist, I don't just look at what's happening on the surface. I want to know what's happening underneath it too.

Because sometimes your skin is simply the messenger.

What is your skin trying to tell you?

When researchers look at the relationship between nutrition and skin health, two patterns keep showing up.

Either your skin isn't getting enough of the nutrients it needs...

...or it's constantly dealing with foods that promote inflammation.

Sometimes it's a little of both.

Let's look at each one.

When your skin isn't getting the nutrients it needs

Think of your skin like a house that's constantly being renovated.

Every day it's repairing damage, replacing old cells, maintaining its protective barrier and helping defend you from the outside world.

Now imagine trying to renovate that house while only receiving half the building materials.

Eventually, something has to give.

The same thing happens inside your body.

Without the right nutrients, your skin simply can't repair and protect itself as efficiently.

Nutrients your skin relies on

Vitamin C and essential fatty acids

These nutrients help support your skin barrier, hydration and wound healing. Low intakes may contribute to dry skin and slower healing (Min et al., 2024; Parga & Coven, 2025).

Zinc

Among other things, Zinc plays an important role in skin repair and immune function. When levels are low, it can contribute to skin inflammation and even hair loss.

B Vitamins

Particularly vitamins B2 and B3, which help maintain healthy skin. Deficiencies can contribute to dermatitis and skin irritation (Lee et al., 2023; Min et al., 2024).

Protein and healthy fats

Protein isn't just for building muscle.

It's the raw material your body uses to make new tissue, including your skin.

Healthy fats help maintain your skin barrier, locking in moisture and helping protect against irritation.

Restrictive diets that are very low in protein or healthy fats can leave skin feeling dry, sensitive and slower to heal (Parga & Coven, 2025; Sharma et al., 2024).

When your body is running short on these building blocks, your skin barrier becomes weaker.

That means it's more vulnerable to irritation, inflammation and the everyday wear and tear that healthy skin usually handles with ease.

When your diet is driving inflammation

It's not always about what you're missing.

Sometimes it's about what you're getting a little too much of.

Modern diets are often packed with foods that can promote inflammation throughout the body, and your skin is often one of the first places that reflects it.

1. High sugar and refined carbohydrates

I'm certainly not here to tell you that birthday cake is off limits.

But when most of our carbohydrates come from highly refined foods, blood sugar and insulin levels rise more rapidly, which may contribute to acne in susceptible individuals (Dall'Oglio et al., 2021; Meixiong et al., 2022).

Balance matters.

2. Dairy and whey protein

Research suggests that milk, particularly skim milk, and whey protein supplements may worsen acne in some people through hormonal pathways (Guertler et al., 2023; Alzaid et al., 2023).

Notice I said some people.

Nutrition is rarely one-size-fits-all.

3. Western-style diets

A dietary pattern high in ultra-processed foods, deep-fried foods, alcohol and large amounts of processed or energy-dense foods has been associated with greater inflammation and poorer skin health, including conditions such as psoriasis and eczema (Boggio et al., 2025; Diotallevi et al., 2022; Kanda et al., 2020).

Rather than focusing on one "bad" food, it's more helpful to step back and look at the overall pattern of how you eat.

4. Ultra-processed foods

Ultra-processed foods have been heavily altered from their original form and often contain ingredients that you probably wouldn't use in your own kitchen.

Think soft drinks, packaged snacks, many breakfast cereals, instant noodles and some frozen convenience meals.

These foods often contain refined starches, added sugars, unhealthy fats and food additives that improve shelf life, flavour or texture.

That doesn't mean every packaged food is automatically unhealthy.

It simply means that diets built mostly around ultra-processed foods tend to crowd out the whole foods that our bodies evolved to thrive on.

The gut-skin connection

One of my favourite areas of nutrition research is something called the gut-skin axis.

In simple terms, your gut and your skin are constantly communicating.

When you feed your gut bacteria with fibre from vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains, they produce beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids.

These compounds help regulate inflammation and support a healthy skin barrier (Trompette et al., 2022).

On the other hand, diets low in fibre and high in ultra-processed foods can negatively affect the gut microbiome.

When your gut isn't happy, your skin often lets you know.

So... what does healthy skin actually like?

The good news?

Your skin is incredibly responsive.

It won't completely change overnight, but it's constantly repairing and rebuilding itself.

Give it the nutrients it needs consistently, and over time it often shows its appreciation.

Research consistently supports dietary patterns that include:

  • Plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit

  • Whole, minimally processed foods

  • Adequate protein

  • Healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil and omega-3-rich foods

  • Fibre-rich foods that support a healthy gut microbiome

These dietary patterns have been associated with better outcomes in acne, rosacea and other inflammatory skin conditions (Boggio et al., 2025; Gürtler & Laurenz, 2022; Kanda et al., 2020).

So....

Healthy skin isn't built by one miracle food.

Or one expensive moisturiser.

Or one supplement.

It’s built through everyday consistency and balance.

Your skin is constantly giving you information about what's happening inside your body.

Sometimes it's asking for more nutrients.

Sometimes it's reflecting inflammation.

Sometimes it's telling you your gut could use a little more support.

As a Clinical Nutritionist, I rarely look at skin in isolation because it almost never exists in isolation.

Our skin, gut, immune system and hormones are all connected.

When we nourish the body as a whole, healthy skin often follows.

So if your skin has been trying to tell you something lately...

It might be worth listening.
